How can I stop a debt collector from calling me?
According to the FDCPA, you have the right to stop a debt collector’s communication with you. To do so, you must write a letter to the individual or agency and demand that they cease contacting you. Once the debt collector gets your written request, they are required by law to stop contacting you.
To make sure that everything is legal, take the following actions:
- Send the request by certified mail and request a return receipt
- Save copies in safe place that can be accessed if you should need to bring forth proof in litigation
- Contact a lawyer to find out how you should write the letter.
If the debt collector continues to contact you, then you may be able to file a lawsuit against them. Talk to our lawyers by calling the office at 770.408.7000 to find out if you have a case. We don’t charge anything for the first consultation!
